What are Virtual Private Servers?
|
|
Virtual Private Servers (VPS), sometimes called virtual dedicated
servers, offer clients the power and control of a dedicated server
at a much lower cost. Virtual Private Servers are multiple server
partitions on a single physical server that share hardware, licenses
and management effort with maximum efficiency. Each VPS performs and
executes exactly like a stand-alone server for its users and
applications as it can be rebooted independently and has its own
root access, users, IP addresses, memory, processes, files,
applications, system libraries and configuration files. |
|
How does that help me?
|
|
For the client, this means greater uptime, stability, and control. With shared hosting, all of the websites on the server share the same processes. This means a faulty script or malicious program on a shared server has the potential to slow down or cripple the server, causing others' websites to suffer. Clients on a VPS are never allowed to exceed their CPU, memory, and disk allocations, which means if their website takes a hit, yours is still running strong.
|
|
What can I do with a VPS?
|
|
With a VPS, you have root access to your virtual server. This means
you can install software or make upgrades whenever you'd like.
Shared hosting doesn't offer a specific technology you need? With
root access, you can install virtually any other piece of software
you need to run your site successfully and efficiently. |
|
So, What do I get?
|
|
Every VPS comes with two dedicated IP Addresses, PHP4 or PHP5, unlimited MySQL
databases, unlimited email accounts, unlimited ftp accounts, and the
control panel of your choice with the ability to resell. Basically,
you get everything you'd get with a shared hosting reseller account,
plus unmetered transfer, more flexibility with your account, and
greater reliability.
MediaCatch makes exclusive use of the premier platform for VPS hosting, called Virtuozzo. Though more expensive than other platforms, it is a proven technology which translates to less headaches and more uptime for our customers. Through our volume purchasing partnership, we are able to offer the leading VPS platform at prices competitive with less robust solutions.
Please note that VPS plans work well for customers who want added flexibility (full server access), reduced impact from bad neighbors, and increased security. They do not work well for customers who are upgrading from shared servers due to traffic or resource usage issues, since there are firm resource limits and these resources are still divided among multiple accounts (these customers do best by moving to dedicated servers). |

If you are looking for that perfect plan and you just
can't find it - we can help! We would be happy to
customize a plan that is just right for you. Please email your specific
requirements to sales@mediacatch.com.
Notes: Since VPS accounts are partitioned in advance, they
currently do not allow disk upgrades - you would just upgrade to the next
level account to add space. If your account requires more than a VPS20, we
recommend that you contact sales for a dedicated server quote.
Bandwidth on VPS accounts is equivalent to 1.5 Mbps,
and is not metered. Unmetered bandwidth means that you can use as much data
transfer as you want without extra fees! You need to be sure that you
purchase the right bandwidth setting for your account, however, as your
instantaneous usage won't be able to exceed the bandwidth setting. An
easy way to think of this is to think of bandwidth as a pipe, and data
transfer as the water flowing through the pipe. A larger pipe can
allow more water to go through at any given time, though there is no
restriction on how much water can go through the pipe over a long period of
time.
VPS accounts are typically placed on dual core dual processor servers or better with 12-16 GB RAM.
Plesk is produced by
SWsoft, the same
company that makes Virtuozzo, which is the VPS-enabling software. You may

The monitoring service includes adding your server to
our remote monitoring software, so that if your server were to fail, we
would know immediately and could take corrective action if you have the
premium service option, or could notify you if you prefer to self-manage
your server.
Premium support includes server hardening (installation
of security, anti-virus, anti-spam software), 24x7 chat and ticket support,
and installation of software updates on request. The firewall is
software-based. We recommend that you select the monitoring option with
premium support, so that we can be proactive about any server problems.
